The ParallelStories of
Spike & Minnie

"Spike"
baltimore, 1997
"Paulie was in 3rd grade and his teacher was Mrs. Grimes. One day he came home from school with one of his test papers. There was a sticky note on the paper that said if he wrote his name as “Spike Reichart” again that he would get an F on the test.
We asked Paulie about it and he told us he really liked the name Spike and that is what he wanted to be called.
I worked at his school and asked Mrs. Grimes the next day. She said that he’d been writing “Spike Reichart” on all his papers even after she told him not to do it so she would have to fail him if he continued.
He did stop although we thought it was funny!"

"Minnie"
new hampshire, 2001
"When Kristen was in the third grade,
Scott and I went to our first parent/teacher conference. the teacher began raving about what a pleasure it was to have “Minnie” in her class. She showed us paper after paper where Kristen signed her name as "Minnie Chester".

If you can believe it, Kristen had an even higher-pitched voice then. She was taunted with the name “Minnie Mouse” every time she opened her mouth on the bus ride to school each morning.
Keeping a cheerful outlook, Kristen decided to embrace her little voice and rebrand herself as Minnie despite the bullies. She had the teacher’s full support!
But we explained that our daughter’s given name was Kristen and that we preferred it to stay that way.
After much deliberation, the teacher agreed."
